Back in March 2017, a team of firefighters from West Palm Beach, Florida got called out to deal with a brush fire near a homeless encampment.
When Captain Greg Gordon and his crew arrived, they came across a homeless man in a homeless camp who was extremely upset about a dog tied to a tree. The poor dog appeared to be malnourished, dehydrated, and in distress. After rescuing the dog, firefighter Marcos Orozco rushed him to Jupiter Pet Emergency and Specialty Center (JPESC) to receive urgent care. The firefighters affectionately named the pup “Smokey.”
According to The Palm Beach Post, Gordon reported that the young boy was severely burned and visibly upset even after they rescued him. Gordon expressed concern for the boy’s survival. Dr. Latimer, the veterinarian, rushed the dog to receive medical attention. Upon examination, Dr. Latimer discovered that the dog had suffered serious burns on its back torso and hind legs. The vet advised the firefighters that the dog would require extensive treatment and care.
During his stay at JPESC, Smokey underwent several blood transfusions, bathing sessions, and bandage changes. The Facebook page of JPESC reported that these treatments were made possible, thanks to “Shadow”. Additionally, Hyperbaric chamber treatments were also given to Smokey to manage the swelling and provide more oxygen to the numerous burns he sustained.
When Smokey first arrived at JPESC, he was quite anxious and fearful of people around him. However, as time went by, the dog gradually became more comfortable with the veterinarians and nurses at the facility. Captain Gordon decided to foster the puppy during his recovery from the injuries he sustained.
Captain Gordon brought Smokey home and introduced him to his two dogs, which made the pup very happy to have new playmates. A week later, Captain Gordon took Smokey to JPEC for a check-up. When Dr. Latimer entered the room, Smokey jumped up and hugged him, showing his appreciation for saving his life. It was clear to see how grateful Smokey was for the vet’s help.
For the last couple of years, Smokey/Finn has been residing with his mother and they both seem to enjoy their new abode. The young pup has become a constant source of happiness for the Gordons. One of Finn’s newfound passions is swimming, and he frequently embarks on exciting adventures with his doting mother.
